Is your digital workplace leading to greater employee engagement?

If you’re like most companies, you’ve probably made some key investments in new, digital technology tools. Researchers forecast that companies will spend nearly $35 to $80 billion on digital workplace tech by 2023. 

There’s a reason these investments are growing—your digital suite impacts your employees’ ability to collaborate, communicate, and innovate. But are your employees engaging with and embracing your new technology tools? And are these tools causing unnecessary dysfunction?

Your digital workplace shapes your employee’s experience. Of digital workplace technology purchases, 66.9% are led by IT. This means that it’s up to the CIO to ensure this tech simplifies workflows and unifies the company, rather than increasing tech fragmentation. IT should prioritize investing in technology that works for every team member. Finding the right solutions can be challenging.   • Workers need tech tools at work to function like the ones they use in their personal lives. If your tools fail to offer a consumer-like tech experience, employees may disengage.

Digital transformations should be informed by the people who are going to be using the new every day.  Before you decide which tools to invest in, make sure you survey the employees who’ll be using them. Successful transformations always take employees’ needs and preferences into account. 

Communicate with all employees (including remote workers) about change  

Change is not always easy or welcome. When we introduce new digital tools into the workplace, we introduce the stress of change into the work culture. To help employees adjust and adapt to change successfully, you must communicate and engage with them. 

Today, that often means taking strategic steps to reach your employees who work remotely or in the field. Globally, 80% of employees don’t sit at a desk and can’t access communications. The right tech can make them feel like part of the company. This means meeting them on the device or channel that they prefer. The rise of the gig economy and freelance work has sparked the growing need for mobile apps to reach remote workers, multilingual capabilities, and centralizing internal communications.

Connected workplaces attract and retain Generation Y and Z workers. These generations expect communication to be seamless. Having the right technology to reach every employee can make a difference in maintaining an aligned organization.
