Taking time to show our gratitude and give back with our SocialChorus family at SF-Marin Food Bank

You may have read a recent post by one of our new employees, Chuck Gose, which discusses his thoughts on the SocialChorus values. They are something we truly believe in and live — both inside and outside of our professional life. We act like owners. We succeed together. We lead. As we all start prepping for holiday plans and family time, we should also take the the time to work hard, show deep commitment, and expect integrity to those who are not as fortunate as many of us.

We Are Lucky

It’s important to take a break from our regularly scheduled program of meetings, brainstorms and calls to think… we are lucky. I come into the office and get to choose from a plethora of food and snacks throughout the day, and come home to my warm bed for a good night’s sleep after a long day. It can be so easy to get wrapped up in the immediate deadlines, year-end goals and other urgent items that we don’t realize how many others could use some support right here in our backyard. And all of the constant going makes doing anything outside of work seem impossible sometimes.

I don’t always have the time I want to spend with my friends or family, so how can I find the time to spend several hours packaging food items at the local food bank, right?

Coming Together to Serve Others at SF-Marin Food Bank

We will always be busy with one thing or another. Taking the time to give back and serve my community is something I prioritize. And one of the values I mentioned earlier – we act like owners – is one of the reasons why I love working at this company. I had an idea, partnered with another teammate and we all saw it through. Our volunteer day wasn’t mandated by HR; it was simply started grassroots-style and I’m so pleased with the turnout.

Some of the SocialChorus San Francisco office spent an afternoon last week with the SF-Marin Food Bank. Their mission is simple: to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin. And with help from community, they believe it’s a solvable problem. Though I’ve been to the food bank many times, I continue to learn something new each visit. Contrary to popular belief, many of the recipients of the food bank’s resources are not our homeless population. Children, seniors, unemployed and low-wage workers make up the majority of those struggling with hunger; San Francisco is missing 29 million meals per year. That’s a lot closer than I realized.

SocialChorus also supported the time off for our distributed team (which makes up 50%+ of the company) to get out and truly create the change they want in their local communities.

It Matters to Us

Like I said, it matters to me and it matters to SocialChorus. Our mission is to transform how workers and organizations stay connected every single day. There are many parts to that lofty mission, but one that especially resonates with me and this context is that we do it for the people — so every single worker – no matter their location, status, role — can have a great experience to do their best work.

I encourage my team and all of you to continue to take this approach in both your personal and professional lives. How can we serve each other? How can we lift one another up? We sure need that mentality right now.
